'Great Southern Land' first appeared on Icehouse's Primitive Man release in 1982 as an album in which singer Iva Davies recorded without a band to back him up, with most of the help coming from producer Keith Forsey. Icehouse's original members had left the band early in the year, so Davies kept the group's name for the album, which fared quite well in Australia but couldn't crack the Top 100 in the United States. 'Great Southern Land' also did well as a single in Davies' homeland, so he put together a new formation of Icehouse in order to support the album with a minor tour. But it wasn't until 1989 that 'Great Southern Land' received ample recognition, as the song was rehashed for Yahoo Serious' Young Einstein movie, which, like most of Icehouse's material, was bigger in Australia than anywhere else. The movie was a comedic spoof on the life of Albert Einstein as a Tasmanian instead of a German, and the song was played as Serious traveled across the hot deserts and mountain ranges of the continent. Its lyrical imagery and unique musical composition, led by some effectual keyboard mixtures, clung well to the scenes of Australia's diverse landscape. Later that year, 'Great Southern Land' received a second life, as Australia's Board of Tourism borrowed the song to air in advertisements across the globe in order to promote the country's numerous physical attractions. It's firm beat and lush, modern sound fell around Davies' description of the country as a land 'hidden in the summer for a million years.' In 1990, 'Great Southern Land' was the title given to Icehouse's ten-song compilation which featured the track, but disappointment set in once again as it and the album from which it appeared created minimal commercial impact for the band.
